IDEA is proud to announce that we are selected to be part of the European Development Days (EDD) 2015. We will organize a session under the topic “Health”. The interactive session, called ‘Combating poverty-related and neglected infectious diseases’ will present the latest findings on co-infections between poverty related diseases and helminth infections, with special emphasis on building integrated and sustained research in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) through research platforms funded by the EC and other international initiatives.
The session is anchored on an EC FP7 project “IDEA” involving 20 leading research institutions (14 in Europe and 6 in SSA). The IDEA project has made major progress in understanding the immunological interplay between PRD and helminth infections. These outputs will have major impact on disease intervention (both in terms of treatment and vaccine development) as well as public health policy. Alongside science, significant efforts have been made in integrating capacity building activities in its research projects, entailing North-South but more importantly South-South exchanges. As a matter of fact, a key feature of IDEA and a main of topic for discussion is how to leverage parallel research programs funded by the EC and international initiatives for sustained development in SSA. Among the speakers will be leading African and European scientists from the fields of HIV, TB, malaria and neglected infectious diseases.

Other Interesting Session to Attend
Another session worth visiting is organized by PharmAccess. The interactive session, called ‘Innovative models for inclusive access to healthcare’ will discuss the role of the private sector in healthcare financing and delivery. Especially in Africa, the capabilities of the state are limited. It is a common myth that the private sector is for the rich and the public sector for people on low incomes. In fact, the latter group makes extensive use of small to medium health Enterprises (SMEs) and NGO, faith-based or for-profit facilities. Nevertheless, a large part of the donor funding was mostly channeled through the public sector. Among the speakers will be leading African and European health specialists both from the public and private sector. For more information, please visit the website www.pharmaccess.org.
